Low calorie sweetened foods and drink consumption has risen dramatically in the US in recent years.
Calorie sweetened beverages include things that contain sugar, high fructose corn syrup and similar sweetened products. Low calorie sweetened products often contain sucralose, aspartame or similar ingredients and are labeled "low or zero calorie", "sugar free" or "low sugar".
The impact of these patterns, especially as consumers turn to low calorie sweetened products, requires a better understanding.
Intake of calorie sweetened beverages is associated with a variety of poor health outcomes. This includes obesity, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, diabetes, atherosclerosis, heart attack and stroke. This is well documented in the medical literature.
However, the relationship between low calorie sweetened beverages and these diseases are not as well understood and continue to be controversial.
Some health experts believe that consumption of low calorie sweetened beverages can lead to increased energy, sugar intake, and poor dietary quality. Additionally, individuals believing they may be "consuming" fewer calories from their low calorie sweetened foods may be motivated to eat more food products from other sources, increasing their net calorie intake.
Per the authors, "few studies have explored in depth what dietary patterns are followed by consumers of low calorie sweetened and calorie sweetened beverages." The inability to consistently determine low calorie sweetened substitutes in food products and the lack of awareness of their presence among consumers has contributed to the difficulty in investigating these.
