Self-control, or the ability to restrain one's impulses, desires, and emotions, is a central virtue in Islam. A lack of self-control is often linked to weak faith (Iman), the influence of desires (Hawa), and the whispers of Shaytan (Satan). The Quran and Sahih Hadith provide profound insights into why self-control might be lacking and how it can be developed through spiritual and practical means.
1. Causes of Lack of Self-Control
a) Following Desires (Hawa):
The Quran repeatedly warns against blindly following desires, which can overpower reason and lead to sin.
- *"And do not follow your desire, as it will lead you astray from the way of Allah."* (Quran 38:26)
Uncontrolled desires (e.g., greed, anger, lust) dominate when one prioritizes worldly pleasures over spiritual growth.
B). Weakness of Faith (Iman):
A weak connection with Allah can result in a lack of motivation to resist temptations. Faith strengthens self-discipline because it reminds one of accountability before Allah.
- *"Indeed, those who fear Allah – when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight."* (Quran 7:201)
C). Influence of Shaytan (Satan):
Shaytan exploits human weaknesses, urging people to act impulsively and indulge in sinful behavior.
- *"Indeed, Shaytan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy. He only invites his party to be among the companions of the Blaze."* (Quran 35:6)
D). Neglecting Remembrance of Allah (Dhikr):
When one forgets Allah, it becomes easier to succumb to negative habits.
- *"And whoever turns away from My remembrance – indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind."* (Quran 20:124)
2. The Quran on Developing Self-Control
a) Patience (Sabr) as the Foundation:
The Quran highlights *Sabr* as essential for self-control. It is the ability to endure difficulties without losing focus on one’s goals.
- *"O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient."* (Quran 2:153)
b) Fearing Allah (Taqwa):
*Taqwa* is a heightened sense of awareness of Allah’s presence, which restrains a believer from disobedience.
- *"And as for the one who fears standing before his Lord and restrains himself from [evil] desires, then indeed, Paradise will be his refuge."* (Quran 79:40-41)
c) Prayer (Salah) and Remembrance:
Salah (prayer) helps regulate emotions and desires, reinforcing discipline.
- *"Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater."* (Quran 29:45)
3. Hadith on Practical Steps for Self-Control
a) Resisting Anger:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provided guidance on managing anger, a common cause of impulsive behavior.
- *"A man said to the Prophet, 'Advise me.' The Prophet replied, 'Do not get angry.' The man repeated his request several times, and the Prophet said, 'Do not get angry.'"* (Sahih Bukhari)
The Prophet also suggested practical measures like sitting down, lying down, or performing ablution to cool down anger.
b) Fasting as a Shield:
Fasting is prescribed not only as an act of worship but also as a means to train self-control over desires like hunger, anger, and lust.
- *"Fasting is a shield. So, when one of you is fasting, he should not engage in obscene language or shouting. If someone abuses him or fights with him, let him say, 'I am fasting.'"* (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
C). Controlling the Tongue:
The Prophet emphasized the need to guard speech, as impulsive words often lead to regret.
- *"Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent."* (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
