Picking out the right drill can be challenging for novices, especially when you take into account the material, flutes, coatings, other factors. But one of the first hang ups I encountered are the different types of drill bits and what sizes are offered. Let’s figure out where fractional, metric, letter, and wire gauge drill sizes came from!
There are many sizes, and there's a little bit of a historical reasoning, as well as some real reasoning behind it. Fractional sizes are common in the United States, Metric type drill bits are standardized by iso and are available in 1mm increments. The wire size drills are exactly what it sounds like, they are based on wire gauge size.
There's lots of overlap among the different types of drill bits, and there's also lots of different sizes depending on which measurement you are references
