Recent studies say that nearly 10% of all women in the United States are at risk for developing postpartum depression after giving birth. Comedian Angelina Spicer knew something wasn't right after giving birth to her daughter. She was able to reach out for help, but noticed that not all women have the resources or courage to speak up and seek help.
Angelina has taken her battle with postpartum depression to fuel her comedy, and after she made people laugh, she took it to the capital of California and was able to get 3 laws passed that address diagnosing and treating postpartum depression.
Along with Angelina's "accidental activism," researchers and psychologists at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles are developing new ways to diagnose and treat postpartum depression that will help new mothers, but also reduce the stigma associated with postpartum depression.
