Sugars provide most of the earth's biomass, are well known key constituents of food and biomaterials and the major source of energy used by our cells. It has recently been discovered that sugars on cell surfaces mediate important intercellular communication events including fertilisation, inflammation, cancer metastasis and infections by pathogens.
