A group of visiting US senators said on Thursday they had warned Afghan President Hamid Karzai that a failure to sign a key Afghan-US security deal would pose a threat to the country and the region.
Following a meeting with Karzai, Republican Senator John McCain said some of the differences between the two countries had been narrowed and could be resolved in a few days or weeks.
"We cannot see a repeat of Iraq. We have got to do everything that we can in order to see that this BSA (Bilateral Security Agreement) is signed," McCain told journalists gathered at a news conference in Kabul.
Karzai has delayed signing the accord with the United States, which US officials have said could result in a total withdrawal of US and allied forces by the end of this year.
Republicans John Barrasso of Wyoming and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina also met with Karzai.
Without a signed deal, all US and NATO forces would have to withdraw from Afghanistan.
