Nigeria, the economic powerhouse of Africa, was plunged into darkness as a devastating fire on a major transmission line caused a complete collapse of the national power grid. The incident, which occurred in north central Niger state, disrupted electricity distribution across the country, leaving millions without power.
The fire, which resulted in an explosion on a transmission line connecting the Kainji and Jebba power plants, triggered a cascade effect, tripping the entire grid. The consequences were profound, with power generation dropping to zero in the early hours of the incident.
While efforts to restore power began swiftly, it was a gradual process. By 1400 GMT, power generation had only climbed to 1,341 megawatts, a fraction of the daily average of 4,100 MW.
This incident underscored the vulnerability of Nigeria's power infrastructure and the challenges in maintaining a stable electricity supply. As the nation grapples with the aftermath, questions arise about the resilience and modernization of the power sector to prevent future grid collapses.
