In many countries, development of the so-called traditional grid has been stymied due to the complexities of infrastructure and the associated funding labyrinth, the consequences of which include poverty, poor health, low educational attainment and sometimes, increased violence and extremist activity. Recently, due to a sharp reduction in prices, and rapid advancement of technology, off-grid technologies are able to provide solutions to put reliable energy services directly into communities where energy access may be extremely limited.
