A preview of two mirrored armoires from the Charles X period! Mercury mirrors are known for the sparkle that occurs as humidity causes the reflective mercury glaze to detach from the mirror. This video shows how the term "mercury mirror" in antiques is very much literal, chemical, as this element has plainly spilled out of the piece on the left.
These are art collection quality armoire à glace, exemplary of fine domestic furniture from the 1820s. Most armoires à glace are considered to be more machine made, factory made inventions of the mid 19th century, but this piece emerges as early as 1815, and the Charles X period of the 1820s left us many artful examples of this piece that stand out from the mass of mid-19th century ones which do not present the depth of quality and rarity required by collectors.
