Michel Farinel (1649-1726): Faronell's Division On A Ground
Published in "The Division Violin" by John Playford, 1684
This is a set of seven variations on the famous "La Folia" theme (or "Folies d'Espagne"), the most common theme adapted by Baroque composers. This one was the best known in 17th century England, attributed to the French composer Michel Farinel.
There are modern transcription of the Division Violin score at Mutopia and at IMSLP:

I have recorded only the seven variations that are in the Mutopia PDF -- I noticed only afterwards that they have left out four variations: the IMSLP version has all 11 variations that are in the Playford book.
I have played the melody on a vintage Italian bowlback mandolin, and the ground bass on mandocello.
