The dictator Francisco Franco was not a nice man. Like all tyrants he spent his informative years between 1936 and 1939 systematically eliminating the opposition to his rule in what would become known as the white terror. It didn’t just start after the civil war, but rather as areas were captured people designated as enemies of the state were executed. There was a poetic like belief that the country had to be disinfected of all undesirables. Besides the mass assassinations of republican political enemies, political prisoners were interned to concentration camps and homosexuals were sent to psychiatric hospitals. After the battle of Badajoz, women and children were shot in the streets, others were rounded up into the bull ring where the executions would go through the night all in all 4000 republican supporters would be killed in that town alone. Franco’s reign of terror during this 3-year period would cost Spain between 50 and 200 thousand people and help cement his position for the next 36 years and mark him as yet another blood thirsty dictator who was only looking out for himself.
