Japan has embarked on its most ambitious chip development program to date. It faces a need to fall in line with US chip restrictions and wants to leverage that as an opportunity to learn from past mistakes and rebuild its presence in an industry it used to dominate. There are plenty of doubts over the likely success of the program given a knowledge gap, a lack of engineers and a tendency to move too slowly. The difference this time around is that the US has an interest in helping.
