The Royal Navy's Type 31 general-purpose frigate will be outfitted with two gun types new to its service. Each ship will be outfitted with sophisticated multipurpose gun systems, such as a Bofors 57 Mark 3 medium-calibre gun, and two Bofors 40 Mark 4 small-calibre guns.
The combination of these two weapons would be very useful against aircraft, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, small boat swarms, and enemy boats.
By delivering heavier shells further away from the ship, the double Bofors gun is superior to Phalanx CIWS in any case.
