Vaccines in Nepal
Before knowing about the vaccines in Nepal and how does it work, we need to have a fair idea about the types of vaccines.
Majorly, there are 3 different types of vaccines in the world currently battling in this Covid-19 pandemic. They are as:
a) Inactivated or killed vaccine
- An inactivated vaccine (or killed vaccine) is a vaccine consisting of virus particles causing covid 19, grown in culture and then killed to destroy disease producing capacity. Eg:
i) Verocell by Chinese Sinopharm conpany
ii) Covaxin by Bharat biotech(Not approved by WHO, but emergency aporoval in india)
b) Viral vector vaccine
- It uses a modified version of different virus i.e. a carrier( like Adenovirus), with small fragment of genetic code of virus causing Covid 19 in it.
Eg: - i) Covishield by Oxford Astrazeneca
ii) Russia's Sputnik V
c) mRNA virus
- It uses a piece of mRNA that corresponds to a viral protein, usually a small piece of a protein found on the virus’s outer membrane.
Eg: - i) Pfizer
ii) Moderna
How vaccines work???
You might be amazed thinking, we are trying to end the pandemic by vaccines, but the vaccines we are giving is madeup of virus itself, the killed virus, somewhere mRNA of virus, and somewhere, the genetic code of virus. Why so?
Well its an easy explanation,
Lets consider your teachers giving you a model question set before you appear for the exams. The model question set wont make you fail or pass, but how it will prepare you for your exams.
This is exactly the case with vaccines. It consists of viral particles, which can't cause the disease, but prepares your body for the time, when you are really infected by the virus. Pretty like the model question right? No diseases, but prepares you for fighting against real infection.
It is because our body produces antibody against foreign particles only when they enter our body. So, what all those vaccines will do is enter the virus or the viral particles in our body, which is not able to cause infection, but able to stimulate our body to produce antibodies against the virus.
So, Let us all make this vaccination drive successful. Lets get vaccinated and step towards ending this pandemic.
2 major interesting facts about Sputnik V from Russia
- All other vaccines are given the same substance in both doses, but in contrast Sputnik V has different formulations for its 2 doses, which is considered one of the reason behind greatly enhanced immunity in ones injected with Sputnik V.
- Also, Sputnik V can also be found in powdered form, due to which it is more stable and can also be stored in less cold temperature.
