88-94 & 95 Pathfinder, Quest, Truck & 300ZX diagnostic Modes & codes:
Prior to 1996 Nissan used it’s own OBD1 codes as did most manufactures. There are several ECM versions for these years, some ECM’s have a switch and some a turn screw, but the Modes and lights between these years mean the same thing as described below.
To Read codes on the ECM: Please Comment
Start the vehicle and let it run for 10 minutes. Turn the selector screw clockwise all the way, and watch the LEDs. They'll flash once, then pause, twice then pause, and on up to five times to indicate the five diagnostic modes. When you see the number of the mode you want, turn the screw counter-clockwise. If you miss the Mode you want it will repeat. After reading the codes turn the engine or key off, in the Mode you are in before changing codes or the stored codes in Mode 3 may be erased.
Mode 1: "Exhaust Gas Sensor Monitor". 5-10 flashes every 10 seconds. Green LED is ON more than it's OFF, there's a lean condition, and vice versa.
Mode 2: Air Fuel Mixture Ratio Feedback Control Monitor. If red and green LED's flash equally together/simultaneously mixture is correct. More Green = LEAN, and vice versa.
Mode 3: Stored FAULT codes.
After selecting Mode 3 in about five seconds it will start to output out the diagnostic codes. Take note of each code as it is displayed as such. The RED LED flashes for the 100’s & 10's position, and the Green LED flashes for the 1's position. Meaning: ie. Three red flash and three green flashes means code 33, Heated O2 Sensor circuit problem. There will be a pause between codes, and will repeat until the ignition switch is turned off or the Diagnostic switch is activated again.
IMPORTANT NOTE: On some Nissans if Mode 3 is selected followed by Mode 4 and then the key is turned off it will erase all stored codes in Mode 3. This can be helpful when trying to determine what faults have been corrected, provided the fault is not an intermittent fault. If the fault is intermittent they will appear after driving the vehicle when the ECM detects the fault again.
Mode 4: Switches On/Off Diagnostic Mode. Checks the function of the switches that serve as inputs to the ECU, specifically those for ignition key start position, idle, and vehicle speed. Refer to a factory service manual to perform these tests.
Mode 5: Real-Time. Gives instantaneous trouble codes to let you know what's going on right now in four monitored circuits. Refer to a factory service manual to perform these tests.
