Hi, I’m Leah from Rampley & Co and today in this short video I’m going to talk you through how to pair your tie and pocket square.
One of the key things about pairing your pocket square and tie is demonstrating that you pay attention to the small details. There are really only a couple of key things to be aware of, with the goal being to complement the rest of your outfit, either by harmonising or contrasting your accessories.
To harmonise your pocket square with your tie, simply choose a colour from your tie and have a similar colour reflected in your pocket square. So in our example here, the gold in our Navy, Saffron & Cream Shantung tie is reflected in deep golds of the Palace Guard pocket square. Always make sure you have another colour or pattern displayed in the pocket square fold, so it doesn’t appear a complete colour block match.
And that’s really all there is to it when harmonising your tie and pocket square. In our example today we’ve using a classic navy jacket with a white shirt as it provides a blank canvas to start with and the accessories become the focal point of the outfit. In future videos we’ll be doing more advanced colour palette and pattern combinations.
At this point we should also say there is one golden rule above all others when it comes to coordinating your accessories. Never directly match your tie and pocket square with the same colour or patterns. The less said about tie and pocket square sets the better…
The other alternative when pairing, is to contrast your tie and pocket square completely. This is a good way to make either your tie or pocket square the singular focal point of your outfit. In this example we’ve opted for a muted tie, with our navy prince of wales tie, and then selected our The Advance of the Scot Guards pocket square, where the deep reds really pop off the jacket and provide a clear focal point for the outfit. You can easily do the reverse with a vibrant tie and muted pocket square, particularly with a white shirt as this will frame the tie nicely. This sort of combination will always give you a nice base to experiment with more vibrant colours and prints without having too many colours competing for attention.
And that’s all there is to it. We hope you enjoyed this short guide to pairing your tie and pocket square.
