Rossini's final and greatest "sin of his old age," the "Little Solemn Mass" is neither little nor solemn, but it is a very serious masterpiece. It exists in two versions, one for chamber ensemble and the other for full orchestra, and it remains completely original--a quirky and delightful parting shot by one of the most consistently underestimated geniuses of the nineteenth century.
