First Fridays - March 2019 (Full Show)
First Fridays (FF) is a niu event series that invites the Oceanic arts community to come together once a month. The First Fridays event on 1 March, will feature creative presentations from Maualaivao Albert Wendt and Jasmine Togo-Brisby, and a live performance by Sema. MC’d by the Reverend Mua Strickson-Pua. With an opening address from Tautai's Director, Courtney Sina Meredith.

MAUALAIVAO ALBERT WENDT
Maualaivao Albert Wendt is of the Aiga Sa-Maualaivao of Malie, Samoa and Aotearoa. He is acknowledged internationally as one of Samoa’s, New Zealand’s, and the Pacific’s major writers and academics. He has published many novels, collections of poetry and short stories, plays, essays, and edited notable anthologies of Pacific writing. He is now Emeritus Professor at Auckland University and continues to write and paint.
JASMINE TOGO-BRISBY
Jasmine is a fourth generation Australian South Sea Islander with ancestral lineage to the islands of Ambae and Santo of Vanuatu. She is a multi-disciplinary artist, currently living and practising out of Wellington. Her research examines the historical practice of 'blackbirding' and the contemporary legacy of this practice. Jasmine consistently exhibits her work in New Zealand and Australia and is also undertaking a Master’s of Fine Art at Massey University.
SEMA
Sema is a new Pasifika R&B/Neo-Soul artist. Born of the shores of the Cook-Islands and mountains of Nagaland, Sema brings a unique sound to the NZ music industry. Her dulcet tones and insightful lyrics reflect a depth beyond her age. She is working on her debut E.P for release in the future.
