McLaren driver Lando Norris won’t be forgetting this DHL Fastest Lap any time soon, and not just because it was the first of his Formula 1 career, but it also cemented his first-ever podium appearance.

The British driver seized his moment during the final lap of the season opener in Austria. Running fourth behind Lewis Hamilton, who had been handed a penalty, Norris only had to reduce the gap on the reigning champion to less than five seconds before the finish line.

Going into the final lap, Hamilton had a lead of just over five seconds. Norris revved up the engine and pushed the limit on every corner, while Hamilton attempted to match him.

As the two cars crossed the line, Norris registered a time of 1:07.475 minutes – the fastest lap, and what a lap it was! Almost eight-tenths of a second faster than his opponent. He let out a yelp of delight over the team radio on realizing that he had secured his first Formula 1 podium.

“I’m over the moon, my best Formula 1 result, and my first ever podium,” said Norris. “We’re all very happy, it’s a great achievement for race one. We did a bit more on merit this weekend and our pace has been very good here. It has not been easy, we didn’t have the third-fastest car on the grid, but we put it all together pretty much before race time. We limited the mistakes we made and took advantage of every opportunity that came our way.”
