Every year corn producers somewhere struggle with drought conditions. The extent of corn yield loss is determined by stage of growth when drought hits as well as the hybrid's ability to withstand drought stress. Pioneer Field Agronomist Jonathan Rotz goes in-depth on how corn responds to dry spells and what water usage looks like in corn plants during dryness. Early in the growing season, water loss from the soil occurs primarily through evaporation from the soil surface. As the crop growth and more leaf area shades the soil, evaporation will decline as transpiration increases.
