If you're using a meter for succulents, stick it all the way down and make sure it's showing "dry" before watering. For most of my succulents, fiddle leaf figs, string of pearls...I wait for level 1 before watering.⠀
⠀
If you're using a meter for tropicals, you will want the meter to show "moist" (levels between 4 and 6) before watering. A lot of tropicals will be fine even if you get into the "dry" levels of 2 and 3, as long as you water them before the soil dries out too much.⠀
⠀
More experienced among you will say "Moisture meters don't always work well". That's true, but neither do other methods. If you're just starting out, you might not always be able to estimate if it's time to water by checking the pot weight and it's more difficult with heavy pots. Sticking your fingers - you can only stick your finger 1-3 inches and it's not really convenient.⠀
⠀
If you're new to plants, a moisture meter will usually show good results for over 90% of plants. I always use it in combination with other methods.⠀
