NID or National Institutes of Design are premier public design institutions in India, alongside IITs. Currently, NID has 7 campuses with a total of 375 seats spread across the nation.
The primary institute, founded in 1961, in Ahmedabad, with extension campuses in Gandhinagar and Bengaluru.
The other NIDs are located in the cities of Kurukshetra, Vijayawada, Jorhat and Bhopal.
The institute offers a four-year Bachelor of Design (B. Des) program in various specializations, including
Communication Design (Animation Film Design, Exhibition Design, Film and Video Communication, Graphic Design)
Industrial Design (Ceramic and Glass Design, Furniture and Interior Design, Product Design)
and Textile Design
Admission to the UG Design programs at NID requires candidates to participate in a two-step NID Design Aptitude Test (NID-DAT).
The initial stage, NID-DAT Prelims, includes a pen-and-paper design and general aptitude test.
The subsequent stage, NID-DAT Mains, usually encompasses an in-studio design test, possibly supplemented by a personal interview.
