Here is helpful tip:
making powders are simple and they usually always work. it they do not, then:
either your proportions are wrong (use scale)
or your materials are moist (dry them)
or you are not grinding them fine enough (grind some more).
Proportions by weight:
Black powder:
75% potassium nitrate (KNO3)
15% softwood charcoal
10% sulfur
Flash powder:
50% potassium nitrate (KNO3)
30% sulfur
20% aluminum
