Taking place on the sidelines of the Shangri-La security summit, Mr Marles' meeting with General Wei Fenghe marks the first high level contact with Australia's biggest trading partner since January 2020.
China ceased contact with Canberra, at a political level, after the Morrison government called for an inquiry into the origins of COVID-19 and then imposed billions of dollars worth of trade strikes on Australian exports.
Mr Marles said it was an important meeting, and a full and frank discussion in which he raised a number of concerns with his Chinese counterpart.
