Before and after edits and retouch of my most recent photoshoot.
I use a technique which is popular among portrait photographers known as frequency-separation
There's a few ways you can go about it. I use a variation of the lasso tool and mixer brush in photoshop.
Since you're editing them on two seperate layers. Frequency-separation allows you to smoothen the skin without removing the skin texture.
It also helps balances skintones, transitioning lighting, shadows, colors and highlights in your photo.
It's very easy to overdue it.
Frequency-separation takes a lot of practice.
A few things I would recommend before getting started:
First make sure it's a high resolution photo you're attempting to retouch. Shoot in raw if possible!
Try to make sure your image is sharp as possible.
Edit your photo first (or just make sure to place your frequency-separation layers above your color grading edit).
Do small pieces at a time.
Remove any and as many blemishes as you can beforehand. The more, the better and it will determine how well your final image will turn out.
Finally, dial down your overall opacity when you're done if it's too much.
Dodge and burn if necessary (also, place it under your frequency-separation layer too, to give it an overall smooth image).
I hope this help,
