I found this antique Japanese ivory carved tusk in a clients house and I’m going to sell it. A few weeks ago it was illegal to sell (see my video on new ivory laws) but a couple days after I posted the video, the law changed!
The ivory ban has been postponed, which mean you can sell antique carved Ivory in the UK up until June 2022. The new laws are apparently to help stop Elephant poaching? I don’t think it will help at all. I think it’s just virtue signalling from organisations and countries to show just what nice people they are!
I know this is contentious, but why not allow people to sell their antique ivory for no financial gain…in other word, they get no money for their ivory. Then, send all the money raised direct to Elephant sanctuary’s in Africa to help save living Elephants as well as feed people, which will stop them poaching Elephants
Experts (like me!) who would check the items out and confirm they’re antique before selling. These experts will work for free…so, no one benefits from the sale
This way, we can wait for the culture in China to change…because this is where the problem is and no one likes to talk about it. In China, new, fresh ivory is still in demand. It’s hugely expensive and wealthy people keep it to show power, wealth and status. Opinions are changing in China, but it will take time
But banning antique ivory in the west does not save Elephants. There is no problem in the UK, Europe or America with new poached ivory products. We don’t want new ivory and we haven’t wanted it for decades
Banning, outlawing antique artworks, making antique ivory’s illegal is just virtue signalling at its greatest. What are we going to do next? Are we going to ban books on topics we don’t like anymore?
I’m being contentious I know, but I’ve been banging on about Elephant poaching in Africa for 20 years and I’ve been involved with anti - poaching groups. We’re still losing one Elephant every 15 minutes on average to poaching and although I appreciate all efforts to help the situation, we are seriously lacking a lot of common sense!
