Why Did Pirates Wear Eye Patches?
The eye patch, that pirates used to wear, was not a Fashion statement or a cover for a missing eye.
In movies, we usually see pirates wearing eye patches. The first impression these patches make is a missing eye or a style statement, peculiar to Pirates.
But no. It was none of them.
It was a clever trick of some of the most intelligent pirates.
A recent study says that the human eye adapts to light within seconds when coming out from the dark. But it takes almost 25 minutes to become used to the dark if you're coming in from bright light.
This phenomenon is known as adaptation of eye or Accomodation.
Pirates had to live among light and dark. One minute they are on deck and the next they need to go below deck. So, some clever ones of them used to cover one of their eyes.
Whenever they had to go into the dark, they used to shift the eye patch from one eye to the other eye. That eye already being used to darkness, helped them seeing clearly even in dark.
Interesting? Isn't it?
