High quality 6.15 CTS natural black opal cabochon originating from Ethiopia. This measures approximately 17.2 x 11.0 x 7.0 mm and is cut into a pear shape.
The stone has a bight firey surface and the play of color consists of mainly red, orange, gold, and green tones. Some flashes of blue and purple can also be seen to travel within the gem. Because of all the blazing red and orange tones, the gem does indeed appear to be on "fire" at certain times
This is a naturally earth mined gemstone and has been smoke treated to enhance color. Don't be fooled by lesser imitations. this is not a doublet or filled product, this is solid earth mined stone.

Ethiopian opals provide an excellent value for consumers as they are considered the most durable type of opal, and are not susceptible to crazing and drying out like other forms of opal. They are also better priced than their Australian counterparts.
Ethiopian opals have an interesting history. Archaeologists say they have been mined there for about 6000 years, and the first source of opals in the world. Interestingly they were forgotten about for thousands of years and rediscovered in the 1990s.
To best care for opals, one must avoid them being submerged in water for extended periods of time, and avoid harsh chemicals or dramatic changes in temperature. With a little care, opals can last a lifetime.
