Being Inbetween
Carolyn Mendelsohn spent six years compiling a series of 90 portraits of girls between the ages of 10 and 12, capturing them as they were about to leave childhood and enter another phase of their lives. Each girl was allowed to dress as they saw fit and they were asked to answer some questions about their future. The only restriction of their pose was a stipulation that they look directly into the lens.
Some of the images have already won prizes for example at the RPS international exhibition and all 90 images have been on display at Impressions Gallery in Bradford, the exhibition closing on 24th July 2021.
Bluecoat Press has published the portfolio in a beautifully produced book “Being Inbetween” ISBN 9781908457592 available from good bookshops and the Impressions Gallery.
This is a recording of a talk given by Carolyn about the project in January 2021 as part of the Contemporary Group monthly talks, but held back until the exhibition had finished.
