15. SOUNDBITE (English) Martin Stancliffe, Surveyor to the Fabric, St Paul's Cathedral:
"The process of cleaning the interior of the building was a very complicated one. We had to keep the building open all the time, it continued to be in use and visited throughout the entire project, so we had to have a process that was building-friendly, if you like - that we didn't make too much noise, make too much dust and we didn't spray the place with water, those kind of things. We actually used a technique that was specially developed for the cathedral, which involves spraying a latex poultice onto the stonework, at night, and then in the day time that could be carefully peeled off, effectively taking the dirt with it. And it proved to be an extraordinarily effective and suitable process for the cathedral."
