Every mural develops differently, and all artists have their own technique. Created by San Francisco artist Min Heo, this silent animation approximates Diego Rivera's approach to the wall using the traditional fresco technique, simplified here into four steps.
Experience "Diego Rivera's America" through January 2, 2023 at SFMOMA to see Rivera's work in person: sfmoma.org/diego-rivera. The exhibition brings together more than 150 of Rivera’s paintings, frescoes, and drawings—as well as three galleries devoted to large-scale film projections of highly influential murals he created in Mexico and the United States. Rather than surveying his entire career, the exhibition focuses on Rivera’s work from the 1920s to the mid-1940s, when he was conceiving a new vision for North America informed by his travels in Mexico and the U.S.
Rivera's largest portable fresco—"Pan American Unity"—is free and open to all on Floor 1. Learn more: sfmoma.org/pan-american-unity.
