Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve and it is still unfortunately causing blindness in the USA today. It is important to get routine eye exams from your ophthalmologist to look for signs of the disease, the progression of the disease can be halted or slowed with appropriate treatment: topical or oral medications, laser, or incisional surgery. Vision once lost, can never be recovered. Glaucoma is known as the thief of sight, as the vision loss is usually slow and painless.
