(7 May 2018) British foreign secretary Boris Johnson is in Washington Monday, expected to spend the next two days meeting with administration officials as President Donald Trump decides whether the U.S. will remain in the multinational Iran nuclear agreement he has bitterly criticized.
He met at the State Department Monday morning with new Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
The two shook hands for reporters during a brief photo opportunity but did not answer any questions.
Johnson's trip follows visits in recent weeks by the leaders of France and Germany, who also tried to convince Trump to stick with the agreement.
All three European countries signed the 2015 deal, along with Russia and China.
In an op-ed Sunday for The New York Times, Johnson wrote that the agreement offered the fewest disadvantages of all the options available.
Trump has signaled he will withdraw from the agreement by May 12 if it is not renegotiated and changed.
