On Wednesday 20th July 2022, the Tory-led Coalition put a motion to Full Council which suggested that the only way to tackle unhealthy eating was to "adopt the Eatwell Guide as the standard they aim to achieve for their food offer." They refused to adopt a greater understanding with the Labour amendment.
As an Ex Subject Lead of DT and Food Technology in Secondary School, I can tell you that healthy food is three times as expensive as less healthy food, calorie for calorie.
The Eatwell Guide is unaffordable for many families (including those receiving Universal Credit).
Healthy food can also carry a higher risk of waste, resulting in a greater financial risk than unhealthier foods.
The real reason many people are not necessarily eating healthy is that it's cheaper to buy unhealthy food.
In 2016 The House of Lords reported that the diet based on the Eatwell Guide would cost £5.99 per adult per day or £41.93 per week.
The report is based on a modeled scenario at the population level, and did not adjust for the popularity of different brands, and did not allow for the cost of preparing products from scratch.
It is worth noting that the estimated cost of £41.93 a week is calculated on a per portion basis (for example, the cost of a single portion of bread) rather than how much a person would need to spend to buy the food in question.
In reality, we don't buy single slices of bread.
In reality, inflation put this price much higher.
Today, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation rose to 9.6%.
This makes one adults weekly shop via the Eatwell Guide £45.96p.
This also does not take into account the rising cost of gas and electricity to actually cook the food. (Energy price inflation jumped to 35.4% year-on-year in May 2022).
Poor eating is a direct consequence of this Cost of living crisis that has been brought on by greedy utility companies and this Tory Government.
When the cost of everyday essentials like groceries and bills are rising faster than average household income, we cannot presume everyone isn't suffering.
They are.
