Trudeau defends COVID-19 border rules, announces new gun control measures | FULL
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended his government's new COVID-19 border rules on Tuesday when asked why fully-vaccinated American tourists would be unable to enter Canada, as Canadians who have received both doses can.
He said while the vaccine protects those who are vaccinated, there is still the risk they could pass it to other people and the government wants to avoid the possibility of transmission in partially-vaccinated or communities with low vaccination rates.
Trudeau made the comments during a briefing outside Rideau Cottage.
The prime minister also said new rules on gun control measures would be announced later in the day, including that as of July 7, those seeking a firearms licence would see a background check look at the person's entire life and not a shortened period of five years. He also spoke briefly about other rules tabled in Parliament Monday that include retailers selling firearms having to verify a buyer's licence before making a sale.
