From the Diary of Lady Clara Hastings of Cliffhurst Castle.
April 7th, 1889
Dearest Diary,
I, Lady Clara Hastings, have decided to keep a complete record of my day-to-day life here at Cliffhurst. I have come to our countryside Estate to enjoy some fresh country air and have just arrived last Saturday by train from our home in London.
Fredrick and I have recently married and he will be joining me here at Cliffhurst end of July. I do miss his company but I have decided to make the best of it and enjoy the quiet country air.
I have come here with my lady’s maid Rosa. She is taking the greatest care of me and the farm fresh fair prepared by cook is simply divine.
Now that I have introduced myself, I will begin to record the details of my day.
I rose at 7:15 am. Rosa has indulged me with a few extra moments of morning rest until I adjust to the country ways. Next week, mornings must begin at 6:45 am, or so I am told.
I began my day as Rosa closes up the windows and opens the drapes to allow the morning sun to fill my room. She serves my morning tea and I take it in my chair overlooking the farm yard. I enjoy a few sips as Rosa makes up the bed and prepares the wash basins with water. I clean and apply powder to my skin. Rosa then helps me into my corset and we pick out a lovely dress of pale blue silk brocade. The one Fredrick surprised me with just before I departed for Cliffhurst.
I then soak my hands in warm water and begin to file and buff my nails, finishing by applying my favorite lavender lotion to keep them soft and smooth, just like mothers.
Next, I clean and brush my long auburn hair. I am so excited to take the fresh air that I can hardly fuss with my hair much longer!
I finish with a spritz of bergamot perfume then Rosa helps me with my jewelry as I ready for breakfast.
In the dining room I notice cook has prepared porridge, bacon and toast with a hot cup of cocoa. I eat in haste. Now finally, the great outdoors.
I grab my coat, books for reading and satchel and Rosa waves goodbye as I set off on my morning adventure.
The air is brisk but tolerable and in the farm yard all the baby sheep are bleating and grazing merrily with the cows as their companions. The countryside at Cliffhurst is so magical. Each adventure I find myself on here I discover something new. Today, I happened upon a little babbling brook and the perfect grassy spot to sit and ready my book. What a treat!
A walk to the stable was next for me as I decided to take Whinny, my horse, out and stretch her legs. She is a feisty but beautiful Lipizzaner. A snow-white beauty and my pride and joy.
I rode Whinny to the edge of the estate, to the misty seas and watched a while as the white capped waves crashed against the cliffside. Thinking fondly of my dearest Frederick.
This is where I shall end my telling of my mornings adventure. There on the cliffside, just Whinny and I and the sea.
