One month after Super Typhoon Rai (#OdettePH) caused massive devastation and displacement, UNHCR remains committed to protecting, providing life-saving assistance, and helping displaced communities recover in safety and dignity.
48 hours after Super Typhoon Rai made landfall, UNHCR was the first agency to reach the DSWD Caraga Emergency Operations Center and together with the Government, conducted a rapid needs assessment of the affected populations.
In the days and weeks that followed, UNHCR and partners worked round the clock to provide emergency shelters to 5,000 individuals in the hardest hit island barangays in Surigao City and Siargao, ensuring targeted and equitable distribution of aid.
Today, access to utilities such as electricity and water remains out of reach for many. UNHCR is working with partners on the ground to determine the subsequent interventions and durable solutions needed by those who fled their homes, especially women and children, to guarantee their safety, security and continued access to services as they begin to rebuild their lives.
