Keeping an eye on Cleveleys Beach - and numbers on the wall! This is a slightly longer video than normal, but if you like beach-stuff you'll find it interesting. Filmed on 26 November 2020 at Rossall Beach Cleveleys.

The big rock groyne at Cleveleys is known as the terminal groyne. It's just to the right of the cafe, opposite The Venue. Between the groyne and the steps at the cafe is a point on the wall, from where regular measurements are taken. With these measurements, engineers are keeping an eye on Cleveleys beach and can see how it fluctuates. There are other numbers on the wall too, but this is the reason for one of them!

Wyre Council have been working with Lancaster University for a number of years, and third year students learn about beach processes using this data. In 2020 they're not able to visit the beach and take their own measurements, so we've been and taken a look at the area to help with their studies.

Also, it's interesting to know how beaches are managed. We tend to look at them and think that they just 'are'. But they need to be tracked and if necessary maintained, so that work can be done to avoid flooding and/or erosion.
