During Shabbat services on March 3, 2023 at Temple Israel (West Bloomfield, Michigan), Rabbi Jen Kaluzny talks about the Book of Esther and that you can be whatever you want during Purim. Everyone knows you are playing a character, it is not a secret.
That we have different personas based on situations and in the Book of Esther, the King is similarly whomever the person(s) he is with at the time. That we all need a strong sense of self, that we all need to be authentic. That our authentic self must show up regardless of what persona is present - that we do not want to be like the King in the Book of Esther, that we need to be ourselves without a mask.
