In this video we're going to talk to an ER doctor about some of the common mistakes that people make after being bitten by a rattlesnake. The first common mistake is sucking the poison out, this has not been shown to have any benefit in helping the person, and it can transfer the Venom to the person who is trying to help you and affect their nervous system. The second mistake is putting a tourniquet around the area that received the snake bite. By doing this you're isolating the poison to one location and it can actually lead to more damage and ischemia. The final mistake is looking for the snake after being bitten. Anti-Venom works for most of the Venomous snakes in the United states, and it is not necessary to look for the snake. Many times the victim will get bitten a second time when they look for the snake. It is rare to die from a snake bite. The best thing you can do is remain calm and get to the emergency department.
