While house sitting for my father I inevitable found myself with some time to kill on Saturday 26-09-2015. Though, being in such close proximity to the Kalbaskraal - Saldanha section this most certainly presented no problem. I headed out towards Darling on the dirt road hoping to find some rail action, eventually settling on a rise near Kiekoesvlei it didn't take very long for my first chase victim to show up.
It was the usual cement working from Bellville, but with a rather interesting combination of locomotives ... I got my first shots and quickly set chase! The backwater dirt road is in pretty good condition and one can easily do 100km/h on it and I certainly did! The train wasn't dawdling and with this section being flat and straight they put up a good fight.
The chase continued on up to Bergrivier siding where the arrival of a coiled steel train from Saldanha presented the opportunity to photograph a train running in the opposite direction as well. I left the cement train to continue on its way and set chase on the other. Stopping at many of the same locations as with the previous train ultimately ending my pursuit at Kiekoesvlei.
The low light presented some frustrating moments as did the wind, ruining many of the sound recordings, but I have invested in a new video camera as well as an external microphone. With that being said, I still have a ton of old footage so the wind noise will continue to appear in my videos for some time to come.
