The 2023 annual Autumn Steam Gala at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the highlight events of the railway's 50th anniversary year, seeing a selection of visiting and home fleet locomotives running an intense timetable. Guests included locomotives which previously called Grosmont MPD home, including LNER A4 Pacific 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' and BR Standard 9F 92214, previously named 'Cock o' the North'.
The gala weekend coincided with the 100th anniversary of LNER J27 Class 65894, ordered under the NER as a P3 Class and outshopped from Darlington on 19th September 1923, with the locomotive now preserved under the care of the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group as the sole-surviving example of the class. To mark the engine's centenary, a repaint into LNER livery was carried out, with the loco carrying her original running number of 2392.
LNER A4 Pacific 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley's saw a return to the line for the second year in a row; Having made an appearance at last year's gala sporting LNER Wartime Black, the Gresley Pacific has since had a repaint into her signature BR Express Blue Livery. On the topic of repaints, Caledonian Railway 439 Class 419 made a visit away from the Bo'ness Railway, now appearing in BR Black Livery, with her BR number of 55189 picked out on the smokebox in Scottish Region Blue.
Other guest locomotives included BR Standard 4MT 75069 from the Severn Valley Railway and BR Standard 9F 92214 from the Great Central Railway, the latter of which being paired with the NYMR's own Single Chimney 9F, 92134, a rare chance to see two 9F running together with some awesome runs up the 1 in 49 gradient between Grosmont and Goathland. Home fleet BR Standard 4MT Tank 80136 appeared during the event running as scrapped sister locomotive 80116, which hauled the last Scarborough - Whitby West Cliff - Middlesbrough train in May 1958.
