(Cannon Beach, Oregon) – Few things on the Oregon coast incite a firing up of the imagination more than that lonesome former lighthouse sitting far offshore between Cannon Beach and Seaside. You can't ever get there, so your brain fills in the gaps with ideas of pirates, ghosts, old shipwrecks, etc.
Known as Terribly Tilly, it served as a beacon for this part of the north coast from 1881 to 1957. It was a place of true solitude, one that drove some lighthouse keepers mad, especially before the US Coast Guard took over in the '30s. Yet some welcomed that remoteness.
That included one rather famous man by the name of James Gibbs, who was one of the last keepers onboard. He went on to start two private lighthouses of his own: one near the Washington coast and one near Yachats, Cleft of the Rock. The latter recently went up for sale.
Terrible Tilly has also been for sale for a time now ([ Ссылка ] ).
These stills were shot over a decade ago when Oregon Coast Beach Connection had the opportunity to take an airplane ride over the ancient sentinel. It was, to say the least, an awe-inspiring bucket list moment. See [ Ссылка ]
