(25 Jun 1977) The Dutch motor-cycle Grand Prix produced little excitement at the Assen circuit on Saturday (25 June '77) but the 140-thousand strong crowd went wild when a Dutch outsider won the star event of the meeting....the 500cc race. Wil Hartog, by profession a farmer, rode a Suzuki machine to victory in a time of 52-minutes 35-point -four seconds. His average speed was 87-point-55 miles per hour.among those favoured to win the 500cc event was britain's ace rider - barry sheene - also riding a suzuki. and sharing the limelight, former world champion - giacomo agostini - from italy.
Hartog took his Suzuki to an early lead in the race. However, after five of the sixteen laps, the French rider - Christian Estrosi - took over. Estrosi had moved up to the front from eighth position. Pressed hard by Hartog, the Frenchman took too many risks and fell in a curve. From then on it was the Dutchman's race. Barry Sheene, who leads the world championship standings, was in Hartog's wake but did not seem to go all out
