My kids were born overseas with the help of two wonderful surrogate mothers. Honestly, going abroad wasn't our first choice. Like many, I was worried about leaving the U.S.. Would the overseas clinic be reliable? Would the surrogate be well cared for? Would the path home be safe and secure?
Looking back, the decision to head overseas was one of the greatest of my life! Conceiving our family was smooth and straightforward -- and also an adventure that we talk about around the dinner table to this day!
That said, not all surrogacy programs are created equal. There are secure and easy commercial surrogacy programs in the United States or Eastern Europe. There are “Altruistic” programs that offer ethical options for qualifying couples in various countries. And there are cheap unregulated programs in developing countries without legal protections.
