Materials science has long played a critical role in lowering carbon dioxide emissions ranging from renewable energy generation to high-performance energy storage. Beyond the energy sector, there remain a number of intriguing opportunities given the significant greenhouse gas emissions linked to materials production.
In this MIT Better World (Sustainability) breakout session, hosted by the MIT School of Engineering in March 2021, Elsa A. Olivetti PhD ’07, the Esther and Harold E. Edgerton Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and Basuhi Ravi, doctoral candidate, address the unmet challenges of reducing the burden of materials production. They touch on the potential for decarbonization in cement, metals, and plastics. Olivetti and Ravi also outline ways in which materials science—and all of us—can have a greater impact on sustainability.
