To what extent can we talk of Shropshire dialect today, who speaks it, and what does it sound like?
This presentation focuses on some dialect studies carried out in Shropshire between 1889 and 1955 by both private individuals and subsequently the University of Leeds, as part of their Survey of English Dialects. Dr Esther Asprey, Senior Lecturer in English Language from the University of Wolverhampton looks at where Shropshire dialect used to fit in to the jigsaw of English dialects 50 years ago, and will present some word maps, grammar and accent features. She will investigate relationships with the Welsh language in addition, before turning to the present day and opening up the discussion to the audience. Even at the time of the Industrial Revolution there was immigration to Shropshire, and post-World War two social mobility rose as travel costs began to fall. New Towns built in the UK contributed to dialect change.
