Hello and Happy Holidays from Metro Waste Authority. We hope you're enjoying all the festivities of the season. Gatherings and gift exchanges bring a lot of joy this time of year, but they also bring a lot of waste -- and confusion about what to recycle and what to throw away.
There are plenty of paper products that can be recycled, so be on the lookout for:
Catalogues, holiday cards, and non-metallic gift wrap. Gift bags are also recyclable as long as you pull the handles off first. The boxes that your gifts come in are recyclable, but make sure you toss the plastic or Styrofoam that may come inside. Also, to save on cart space, which is especially important this time of year, break them down before tossing them in your cart.
While your recycling cart fills up, there are some things that belong in the garbage.
Strands of Christmas lights and garland that you know longer want belong in the garbage, or you can donate them. A list of places can be found in our recycling guide at whereitshouldgo.com.
Reuse ribbons and bows as much as you can, but then they belong in the garbage.
If you're going to use single-use dishes, such as paper plates, cups, utensils, and napkins, those belong in the garbage once you're finished with them.
If you bake with aluminum pans and aluminum foil, toss them in your garbage to dispose of them.
