STORYLINE
Two tour buses travelling at high speed collided head-on on a main road in southern Afghanistan on Monday evening, killing about 25 men and 15 women and children, authorities said.
The crash occurred on the main Kabul-Kandahar highway near the border area between Ghazni and Zabul provinces, they said.
The authorities blamed careless driving for the crash, saying there were no speed limits in operation for the buses.
Both drivers were among the killed.
Afghanistan's highways are patrolled by very few police and speed limits generally do not exist.
Police checkpoints are set up along the highway but are there to provide security from Taliban militants or to search for weapons or drug smugglers, rather than to enforce basic traffic safety laws.
The crash occurred only an hour before sundown during the holy month of Ramadan, when Afghans in the Muslim country would be allowed to eat and drink for the first time since before sunrise.
