(June 2) Watch live as President Joe Biden is expected to announce a plan to work with churches, colleges, businesses and celebrities to boost coronavirus vaccinations in the U.S., where demand for the shots has faltered, on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, in Washington, D.C.
The administration on Wednesday called for a national month of action, including initiatives such as free child care for people getting vaccinated, extended hours at pharmacies and phone banking to encourage people to get inoculated.
Biden has set a target of giving 70% of U.S. adults at least one shot by July 4th, when the country celebrates its Independence Day holiday. About 62.8% have received at least one dose so far.
The pace of U.S. vaccinations has slowed but cases and deaths continue to fall. The 7-day average of cases has fallen to roughly 16,000, the lowest level since March of 2020, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show.
The U.S. is now giving out about 1.2 million shots per day, lower than any time since January, when vaccines were in scarce supply, and down from a high of 3.4 million from mid-April. Despite the slowing rate, Biden remains on pace to hit his 70% target, barring a sharp new slowdown.
